Match Report

Newspaper extract from The Sporting Post.

Dundee bring back strikers Ray Stephen and Graham Harvey against Motherwell, leaving out youngsters Derek McWilliams and Colin Hendry. Stuart Rafferty is on the bench.

Motherwell striker Andy Walker goes down on the centre spot as the game starts, injured in a collision. He needs treatment before he can continue.

While Walker is out of the play, Dundee sweep towards goal and Brown has a good chance from 16 yards. His left foot lets him down and the ball goes yards wide.

Reilly races through for Well and keeper Geddes goes on the penalty spot to knock the ball from the feet of the ex-Dundee United striker.

Dundee look positive in their quest for goals and they get one in eight minutes.

The scorer is HARVEY who takes a throw in from the right, turns neatly, beats a couple of defenders to make space and sends a low shot past keeper Gardiner.

Dornan crosses a dangerous ball into the Dundee penalty area which Glennie fails to clear and is lucky to have Shannon behind him to do the job.

The second goal comes in sixteen minutes and it is another neat job.

Harvey again shows fine skill as he beats two defenders, sends the ball to McKinlay on the left and the cross is neatly headed into the net by STEPHEN.

Connor, Harvey and McKinlay tear the Motherwell defence apart with a move of outstanding quality and Stephen hits a tremendous 18- yard shot which hits the bar and goes over.

A McCormack cross is met on the 6-yard line by Harvey whose header goes high.

The home side continue to put the bottom club through torment Wishart belts the ball over his own bar in one hectic moment and in the next, Dornan takes a face knock and is led off for treatment.

While he is off Dundee score again in 28 minutes. A Connor corner from the right finds McCORMACK unmarked and the skipper's header sneaks in at the far post...where Dornan would have been if he had been on the field.

Dornan is led to the pavilion and his place is taken by McStay.

Brown takes a free from Glennie and races into the penalty box where he is dispossessed at the last gasp by McCart.

Kennedy is booked for tripping Harvey.

One of Motherwell's better moves features Blair and is poorly finished by Wright.

Half-time-Dundee 3. Motherwell 0.

Reflections This is high quality play from Dundee against a poorly organised Fir Park side.

McKinlay wins the ball in midfield and breaks clear after side-stepping two defenders. He tries to place the ball just inside Gardiner's left-hand post from 20 yards and shows his disappointment when it goes a foot wide.

There's a spark of life from Motherwell when Walker fires in a spot-on shot from 25 yards. Geddes gets right behind the ball.

Connor is unlucky when his touch does not divert a Shannon cross goalwards.

So much in command are Dundee that Duffy is given offside in the Motherwell penalty area and a shot from Smith scrapes past the wrong side of the post.

Stephen is right under a cross from McCormack but can get no power into his header.

Dundee are still doing their stuff all over the field, except in the front of goal, and Motherwell are beginning to regain their composure.

In 67 minutes Walker takes the ball through and gives it to REILLY, who hits a low shot which trundles into the net.

This stings Dundee, and when Harvey is halted in the penalty area the ball rolls to Gardiner. The keeper is slow to grab the ball and Stephens slides in to force it into the net. The referee judges the keeper was impeded.

In the last minute Shannon is booked for a tackle on McCart

Final-Dundee 3, Motherwell 1.

Summing-Up-Dundee won easily enough, but what hap-pened to their scoring touch in the second half?
