Match Report

Newspaper extract from The Courier.

Paisley is not a place where Dundee pick up many points. The Dens Parkers have only one Premier League win there.

Love Street is a place where they have little luck, and so it was again on Saturday when they went down by the only goal of the game.

There was a large slice of bad luck about the goal. Bobby Glennie headed the ball clear, it struck Rab Shannon on the hand and referee Kenny Hope awarded a penalty kick.

Gardner Speirs is a spot kick ace and Dundee keeper Bobby Geddes stood no chance with the perfectly placed kick.

Dundee did not lie down to this misfortune and from then on had the lion's share of the attacking play and made enough chances to win the game.

But they could not put these chances away, and once more it was clear that the side's great est need is for a striker who can turn chances to goals.

When it was all over, even Saints boss Alex. Millar admitted, "They were a better team than us on the day."

One Love Street hero was central defender Peter Godfrey, who played with a broken nose and went into hospital yesterday for remedial surgery. He won almost everything in the air and shirked nothing.

The player who caught the eye consistently was again the gangling young Dens Parker, Derek McWilliams, who shared the main striking duties with Ray Stephen.

The red-haired Dark Blue did many clever things and showed great determination, but the outstanding feature of his play was an amazing miss.

In the first half he broke clear of Godfrey, rounded keeper Campbell Money and, with the unguarded goal at his mercy, hesitated for a second.

That was long enough for substitute Neil Cooper to knock the ball away.

McWilliams' pace and persis- tence earned him admiration for his attacking play. But in defence his passing and hesitancy can put his side at risk.

Colin Hendry, who replaced Stuart Rafferty at half-time, showed good touches in defence and attack. He hit a good shot past Money, but was offside and the "goal" did not count.

Jim Duffy was again impress- ive in defence and the game was a first-team return for Tosh McKinlay, who had a quiet game. at left midfield but showed some good touches in attack.

Bobby Glennie and Rab Shannon were booked.
