Dundee last night crashed out of the Skol Cup at the hands of First Division Hamilton.

The telling blow was struck 11 minutes into extra time when former St Johnstone star John Brogan capitalised on a slip by Rab Shannon, but really Dundee have only themselves to blame for this shock exit.

They had the edge over Accies throughout normal time, and in the dying moments of injury time missed a penalty.

Hamilton now meet Rangers in the quarter-finals next week, but the tie is unlikely to be played at Douglas Park, scene of last night's triumph for them, because of safety regulations.

Contrary to the numbers on their jerseys, Dundee line up with Jim Smith at right-back, Rab Shannon on the left and Duffy and Glennie operating in a separate defence.

Albert Kidd almost opened the scoring in five minutes with a snap shot from the edge of the box which Ferguson did well to turn round for a corner.

Hamilton's response was provided by Brian Wright, who had passed a fitness test earlier in the day.

The big midfielder cracked a Pelosi corner high over the Dundee bar, but 60 seconds later his header from a Clarke cross was much nearer the target.

The Dark Blues, however, struck the first blow on the quarter- hour mark.

Smith found John McCormack on the right and the latter's measured cross picked out the unmarked Kidd, who headed home with little fuss.

Dundee should have gone two ahead in 30 minutes when Harvey was put clean through, but his shot struck Ferguson's legs.

Ray Stephen forced the Accies keeper into a fine save from close range soon after, but against the run of play Hamilton equalised just four minutes before the break.

Bobby Glennie was adjudged to have fouled Wright in the box and referee Delaney had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. It looked a harsh decision, but John Pelosi gratefully accepted the award, converting the penalty.

Dundee boss Archie Knox reshuffled his defence during the interval with Duffy and Smith switching roles. It proved to be an eventful move for Duffy. Just seven minutes into the second half he was caught late by Pelosi and required treatment before continuing. His assailant was rightly booked.

Connor took the resultant free kick and found Glennie, whose back header flew inches wide of the post.

Apparently recovered from his injury, Duffy incurred the displeasure of the Douglas Park crowd for a bad foul on Hammill which earned him a caution.

There was a hint of nastiness beginning to creep into play and Wright became the third entry in referee Delaney's notebook on the hour mark.

In an effort to make the breakthrough Dundee sent on Walker McCall for Graham Harvey. Accies defence was almost breached.

when McCormack got his head to a Kidd free-kick, but once more the effort went narrowly off target.

In 80 minutes Rafferty was denied by the woodwork when his 20-yard shot hit the crossbar.

Former Aberdeen and Hibs attacker John McGachie replaced Wright and within seconds he was booked for a foul on Glennie. In the dying minutes Ferguson brilliantly tipped over a McCall cross and Dundee survived one or two anxious moments.

At the end of normal time both sides left the park before beginning the additional 30-minute period.

A tragic error by Rab Shannon 11 minutes into the first period of extra time led to Hamilton taking the lead.

The young defender was woefully short with a passback to Geddes and John Brogan raced in to lob the ball over the keeper and into the net.

Brown immediately replaced Rafferty for the Dark Blues, who had a mountain to climb.

Sinclair had his name taken for a challenge on Kydd as the tension mounted and, with just three minutes left in the second period, Dundee were given a lifeline with an award of a penalty

when Speirs brought down Brown in the area. Jamieson was booked for protesting about the award, but Accies' anger turned to delight seconds later when Bobby Connor shot straight at Ferguson and the keeper saved.
