Match Report

Newspaper extract from The Courier.

United striker Davie Dodds played himself straight into manager Jim McLean's Hampden plans with a fine display in last night's Forfarshire Cup semi-final tie at Dens.

Dodds, who has missed the last two Premier League matches through suspension, showed few signs of rustiness as United staged a strong comeback to secure a final meeting with Forfar-the date of which has yet to be arranged.

Dundee had the best of the early exchanges with Stephen sending a free header over Thomson's bar and Gordon McLeod being forced to clear a Harvey effort off the line as they probed for the opener.

It came in 37 minutes when McWilliams made good ground down the left, evading two tackles, and cut the ball back into the path of Ray Stephen to fire a low shot past Thomson.

Six minutes later the Dark Blues went two up when United's defence failed to clear a Connor corner, allowing McWilliams to net from close range.

Straight from the restart, however, United struck back.

A Coyne cross was met perfectly by Dodds and although Geddes got both hands to the ball he couldn't keep it out.

With half a dozen hopefuls in the line-up Dundee United came back strongly in the second half.

Ralph Milne pulled them level from the penalty spot minutes after the interval after Glennie had fouled Dodds and in 71 minutes they went in front for the first time in the match.

Milne caught out Dundee's defence just inside the halfway line. He lobbed the ball over the advancing Geddes and John Reilly had only to knock it home from two yards to secure United's place in the Forfarshire Cup final which looks unlikely to be played before next season.
