Match Report

Stuart Rafferty is back in the Dundee side for the cup tie at Ibrox. Walker McCall is missing. Iain Ferguson is still not fully match fit and is on the bench for Rangers.

McGeachie stops Cooper at the edge of the Dundee penalty area as Rangers try to make best use of a long clearance by McCloy.

McGeachie does well again to clear from MacDonald.

Rafferty slips the ball inside, but Harvey touches it too far ahead and loses control.

Johnstone has the first chance for Rangers, as he jumps at the far post to meet a Cooper cross from the right.

It's McGeachie again who steps in to head past the goal.

In nine minutes Dundee grab the lead. A Rafferty corner from the left is missed by everyone at the near post, comes off a Rangers player, and falls to BROWN in front of goal, who slams it into the net from four yards.

A Cooper free from the right makes a dangerous moment for Dundee as the ball reaches MacDonald, only a couple of yards from the far post.

Brown blocks two shots from the wee striker, then comes away with the ball.

Connor and Harvey set some problems for the Rangers defence.

Rangers fans howl hopefully for an award as McCormack leans over Cooper to head away a dangerous ball.

They are further disappointed when Cooper is judged to have handled in the Dundee penalty area and when nothing is given as the ball strikes a Dundee arm in the box.

Paterson hits a 20-yard shot which Geddes stops but cannot hold. McCoist slips in to steer the ball into the net, but from an offside position.

Harvey cannot control the ball when he catches a low clearance from McGeachie and an opening disappears.

Brown tries one of his left-foot specials from 35 yards, but is yards too high.

McKinlay fouls Cooper out on the right and McPherson's head glance from Cooper's kick goes wide.

Smith slides to the rescue as a high ball from MacKinnon arrives at the edge of the goal area. He sends the ball past for a corner.

Stephen chests the ball down on the edge of the Rangers penalty area and turns to make space for a shot which is a yard too high.

McCoist goes down to a McKinlay challenge as he races into the penalty area, he looks long at the referee before he, is convinced no penalty award has been given.

Rafferty misses a great chance for Dundee in 32 minutes. From just six yards out he sends a left-foot shot into the side net.

MacDonald and McCormack are booked following an off-the-ball incident. The players shake hands and the game restarts with a bounce ball.

McCoist breaks quickly on the right after Dundee give the ball away. Glennie has to crack the ball out of danger but misses completely and is relieved no Ranger is behind him.

Brown is booked for an attempted foul on MacDonald as Dundee struggle to hold Rangers.

Glennie, Johnstone and Geddes finish in a heap as they all go for the ball, but the keeper comes up with the ball

Half-time Dundee 1. Rangers 0,

Reflections-This is a gutsy, physical tie and Dundee have battled bravely to hold their lead.

Three throw-ins take Rangers into a dangerous posi- tion on the right. Cooper has a chance to cross, but fouls Connor.

With six minutes of the half gone Rangers send on Prytz for Paterson who is limping and Fraser steps back into defence.

A bad mistake by McCormack and McGeachie lets McCoist grab possession, but he hits the ball left-footed over the bar.

Brown is down holding his head and Rangers try to take advantage of this gap, but can make nothing of it.

Brown recovers, makes a great run, works a one-two with Stephen then mishits an eight-yard shot wide.

Another chance goes to McCormack when he meets the ball on the edge of the box. The Dundee skipper miskicks completely.

McGeachie races in to meet a Brown free and collides with McPherson. Both go down and get lengthy attentions.

Jocky Scott takes the chance to attend to Brown's face injury.

Harvey makes a poor job of a shot from 10 yards and McCloy is scarcely troubled.

In 63 minutes Rangers send on Ferguson for MacDonald.

A 35-yard pass back by McCormack beats Geddes and goes for a corner.

McCoist gets a touch to a Cooper corner only three yards from goal and sends the ball straight to Geddes.

Rafferty races into the Rangers penalty area and tries to lob the keeper, but McCloy takes the ball easily.

Prytz tries to take Geddes by surprise with a 30-yard shot, but the keeper is not kidded.

McCloy narrows the angle well after Rafferty cuts the ball back to Harvey.

A distressed McGeachie goes off with 14 minutes left and is replaced by Richardson. McCormack steps back to right back. Kidd goes on for Harvey.

MacKinnon is booked after a foul on McKinlay.

McCoist shoots wide of an open goal after Geddes made a poor job of punching out the ball.

Final-Rangers 0, Dundee 1.

Summing-Up-A tremendous performance by Dundee. Scorer John Brown is the man of the match.
