Match Report

Allan Blair returns to the Dundee goal for the make-or-break last game of the season. Gerry Davidson is included up front. Peter Mackie is on the bench.

Airdrie, already relegated, bring back John Martin in goal and make four changes in the outfield.

Clark takes a knock in the opening seconds and McKeown's free causes confusion in the Dundee defence which McKimmie brings to an end with a powerful clearance.

Blair shows skill and courage when he comes out to block a shot when Clark is through with only a minute on the clock.

Ferguson sends over a couple of well-flighted corners from the left.

Davidson tries to hook the first for a goal, but his efforts hit a defender. The second kick is headed in by Sinclair and McCafferty scrambles the ball off the line.

Another Ferguson comer is headed by Sinclair and Anderson heads away. Airdrie race out of defence and Kerr takes a return pass to send a low shot past the far post.

When Clark turns to head for goal McKimmie turns the ball for a corner.

Clark gets on the end of a McKeowne free to head high and wide from six yards.

Stephen takes a major part in a Dundee move which also features Ferguson. Stephen starts it off in midfield and ends up just failing to get a touch to force the ball past "keeper Martin six yards from goal. A free by Kerr sparks a spot of bother for the Dundee defence which is cleared up by McKimmie.

McCafferty gives a good pass to Campbell gets an equally good ball back then wastes by shooting well off target.

Offside decisions halt a couple of moves by eager Dundee. A hefty clearance by an Airdrie defender winds referee Cuthill. Dundee go in front in 32 minutes.

FERGUSON is fouled on the edge of the penalty area and Fraser touches the free to the youngster whose 20 yard shot flies low into the net at the right-hand post.

A Campbell shot is blocked but not cleared and another chance falls to Kerr who sends his shot wide. A Clark header goes past the post with Blair only able to watch. Just on the whistle a close In shot by Clark hits the post and Smith knocks the rebound for a corner.

Half-time Dundee 1, Airdrie 0.

Reflections-It was Dundee's half and Ferguson's fine goal took a lot of pressure off. But Airdrie are dangerous on the break.

Dundee sweep straight in to attack and McGeachie sends a square pass to Fraser, whose 20-yard shot goes just wide.

A Davidson shot is blocked and Martin makes a fine save when McLelland pops up in the inside right position to hit a powerful shot.

The persistence of Davidson enables him to win possession and cross from the left. In a wild scramble on the six-yard line Kerr comes to Airdrie's rescue. The ball comes straight back and Kerr saves the day again with another determined clearance.

McKimmie, limping despite treatment for an ankle knock, is replaced by Kidd. McGeachie goes to right back.

Dundee have lost some of their momentum and there are a few frantic moments around goal as defenders make mistakes.

A good cross by Stephen makes a fine chance for Ferguson at the far post. He has the goal at his mercy but his header from six yards sees Martin make a fine stop on the line.

A Kidd cross to the far post is headed against the post by Sinclair and a long lob by Sinclair is punched from just under the bar by the 'keeper to Stephen, who somehow puts the ball over from three yards.

Smith knocks away a low shot while Blair is out of position. The 'keeper is on the spot to punch away a dangerous cross.

A Sinclair pass finds Davidson unmarked on the edge of the penalty area, but the young striker's low shot is wide.

With 10 minutes left, Airdrie send on Flood for Kerr.

A chance falls to Davidson, who meets a Fraser pass 12 yards out, only to shoot past.

In the last minute Tierney kicks a Ferguson cross over his own bar.

Final-Dundee 1, Airdrie 0.

Summing-Up Dundee are safe. The fans pour on to the pitch to share the moment of relief and Donald Mackay is mobbed. There was only one goal in this nail-biting finale but it was enough. Bad luck, bad finishing and a determined defence kept the fans on edge until the final whistle.
