Match Report

Newspaper extract from The Sunday Post.

After four defeats in a row, Dundee badly needed a confidence-boosting win at Kirkcaldy-with a performance to match. But they got neither.

In fact, Dundee's lack of confidence was very much in evidence at the start, Raith spending the first half-hour of play camped in the Dundee half.

As a result Rovers should have been at least two ahead before Dundee threatened Walker for the first time.

Russell blasted a shot into the side net from close range when it seemed easier to score and Mitchell shot wide after taking a pass from Russell and leaving McGeachie stranded at the edge of the box.

But, as so often happens in football, the team taking the pounding took the lead-and that after missing two easier chances than Raith, the sinners being Fleming and Stephens.

In 43 minutes a high cross was headed against the bar by MacDonald and Stephens was on hand to poke the rebound over the line.

Dundee's goal boosted the team's performance after the break, but only until Raith equalised. Mitchell's free kick was headed out and Urquhart's shot spun high into the goalmouth, off the luckless MacDonald. Full marks to little Ballantyne, who out-jumped the bigger Dundee defenders on the line to force the ball home.

After Raith's goal Dundee functioned only in fits and starts and with Raith not much better, a share of the spoils was the only fair result.
