Match Report

Newspaper extract from The Sunday Post.

Dundee's hopes of advancing beyond the qualifying stages of the League Cup were virtually killed at Ibrox last night when they lost 4-1 to a Rangers' side superior in almost every department.

The home side almost took the lead in the third minute. A magnificent through ball from Russell gave Bett space on the right and his cross was thumped against his own upright by Les Barr.

Then, before the defence could reorganise itself, McAdam headed the rebound into the side netting.

Keeper Bobby Geddes, celebrating his 21st birthday, was able to prove his worth with a magnificent dive to his left to hold a point blank McAdam shot

Donald Mackay's men delighted the small travelling support by opening the scoring in the 31st minute. Stewart failed to hold a Scrimgeour header from 15 yards and Ian Fleming smashed home the rebound from an acute angle.

Rangers fought back strongly and a Cooper free kick on the edge of the box rattled Geddes's crossbar five minutes later.

The respite was brief. Sixty seconds later McAdam met a Cooper cross with his head and gave Geddes no chance. The ball flashed past him at his left hand post.

Dundee should have regained the lead in the 49th minute when Albert Kidd riggled through the Rangers' defence only to allow Stewart to save at his feet.

That miss proved costly. Two minutes later, Rangers were in front, Derek Johnstone heading home a Cooper cross.

John MacDonald and Peter Mackie replaced Bett and Scrimgeour respectively but Rangers surged forward and Alex Miller made it 3-1 in the 57th minute with a crisp left foot drive from 10 yards after MacDonald had done the spade work.

Ray Stephen came on for Barr as Dundee battled to get back in contention but Rangers were still on top and Geddes foiled MacDonald with a superb save from the youngster's 18-yard effort.

He wasn't to be denied, however. With seven minutes left he outstripped the Dundee defence to a Russell pass and slotted the ball under the advancing Geddes.
