Match Report

Newspaper extract from Sunday Mail.

Mortons bid for a place in Europe next season took another hefty knock at Cappielow.

For despite outplaying relegation-haunted Dundee for long spells, they failed to make their superiority tell.

If Morton eventually fail to gain a place among Europe's elite, they will look back on this game with anger and frustration.

They had numerous chances to push Dundee nearer the First Division. But without the inspiration of flu victim Andy Ritchie, their attackers lacked composure in the hectic action around the Dundee goal.

Yet Morton got off to a flier with an early penalty. It came when Dundee centre-half Bobby Glennie handled the ball when pressured from both sides.

Jim Rooney gave keeper Ally Donaldson no chance to put Morton firmly in the driving seat.

Morton pounded the Dundee goal, but typical of their lack of poise was one effort by Roddy Hutchison.

Just six minutes from time Donaldson's only mistake of the match was dropping a cross, but Hutchison incredibly shot wide with the goal gaping before him.

Then in the 53rd minute Morton did everything right for once but Donaldson did even better. He had a fantastic one-handed save from a close range header by Joe McLaughlin.

It was then that Dundee sensed they could salvage a result vital to their survival hopes.

Five minutes later they equalised when Stuart McLaren headed in a corner from Jim Murphy.

This goal stirred Morton into even fiercer action but again and again they were betrayed by their shoddy finishing.

Admittedly, they were desperately unlucky when a header from Ally Scott hit the post. But there was no excusing a glaring miss by Jim Tolmie, just four minutes from time.

Three players were booked-Morton's George Anderson and Joe McLaughlin along with Leslie Barr of Dundee.
