Match Report

Newspaper extract from Bobby Flavell, The Sunday Post.

I might have known they wouldn't let me forget it.

TWENTY-EIGHT YEARS ago I scored the two goals for Dundee at Hampden in the League Cup final which ensured Kilmarnock collected runners-up medals.

Since then, even though I spent a couple of seasons playing here, I haven't been the most popular man at Rugby Park. After all this time, however, I thought perhaps they had forgiven me.

No chance! The first thing I read in the match programme, under a heading "Match to Remember," was an item jogging everyone's memory by recalling that very game.

Well, perhaps I've redeemed myself a bit. At least I don't have to report a Killie defeat.

For quite a while, though, especially in the first half, I thought I was going to get further into the bad books by doing just that.

My prime object, however, was to cast my eye over Dundee. No doubt Tommy Gemmell will be quite happy with the shared points. But had his team taken just a couple of the chances they had early on, when it seemed difficult to imagine how Killie have lost only seven goals at home this season, he would have been even happier.

Over all, the game for me was spoiled by two things which, in my day, were considered cardinal sins for any footballer.

BEING CAUGHT IN POSSESSION AND BAD PASSING.

I lost count of the number of times either or both were committed, with the result that neither team really got on top.

Taking that into account, I prefer to say that neither side really deserved anything more than a point.

But I thought my old mates from Dens Park were a bit unfair to me.

My new reporter's pen had hardly had time to get warmed up when they took the lead.

McCulloch did well to get to a stinging Shirra shot, but the greasy ball bounced from his chest, and debut boy lan Fleming tucked it away in a manner I would have been proud of.

The Killie equaliser came as a result of a terrible defensive blunder by the Dundee defence. The ball eventually broke to Mauch len, and his header found unmarked Houston and he did the rest.

As a new boy, I wasn't quite sure just who to watch out for. It's harder than I thought to look at 22 players at the one time.

Man-in-the-news lan Redford hadna good second half, and sub Jim Murphy added a lot of life to the Dundee forward line. But the biggest mystery is whatever happened to Peter Mackie?

First half. He went through more work than the Bionic Man. Second half he was more like the Invisible Man

Best for Killie were McCulloch, Clarke, McDicken, and Houston. In a match in which referee M. Downie didn't exactly excel himself, Peter Millar was booked.
