A "Titanic" battle in icy conditions, and in the end it was Dundee who were sunk because of two bad mistakes.
After an even first half-hour, when both sides created a couple of good chances, Shirra needlessly fouled Fleming in midfield.
Narey's free kick was nodded on by Hegarty to Holt, who drove the ball high into the net.
Dundee's second blunder came when young Ferguson passed a high ball back to Donaldson. The 'keeper leapt to his left to palm it out. but only as far as Willie Pettigrew, who hammered an angular shot into the net.
It was an eventful afternoon for John Holt.
Earlier, Dundee had a penalty claim turned down when a cross appeared to strike the United midfielder on the arm.
Then, five minutes into the second half, Holt was stretchered off and United lost much of their fluency and momentum after his departure.
The second half rapidly developed into a battle as first McGeachie was booked for tripping Sturrock, and Glennie had his name taken for talking out of turn.
However, the worst incident came when Kopel grabbed Schaedler's jersey and the Dundee man swung a fist to free himself. Kopel was booked and Schaedler sent off.
Dundee's second-half raids were mostly well mopped up. Even so, Ferguson and Mackie both struck the woodwork.
United gradually put a stranglehold on midfield and substitute Steve Murray should have added to the tally with a point blank header which Donaldson clawed away magnificently.
In a slick team effort by the Tannadice Terrors, Narey, Bannon, Fleming and Holt just shaded their team-mates.
For Dundee, MacLaren, Mackie. Sinclair and Shirra were stalwarts.
