Match Report

Newspaper extract from The Sporting Post.

Ian McDougall is in the Dundee side in place of Billy Williamson for the vital game at Greenock.

Jim Shirra and Dave Johnston are on the bench.

Morton field the side which clinched promotion, and they get a great welcome from their fans.

Tom Gemmell leads the Dundee side on to the field to the skirl of the pipes and they cheer Benny Rooney and his promoted troops as they come out, Both teams get civic wishes from Provost Freddie Fletcher.

Dundee have a chance in two minutes when Caldwell heads into the goal area. Sinclair misses the ball and at the second attempt hooks it into "keeper Connaghan's arms. Pirie breaks on the right and marks time till support streams up the middle. With three men waiting for the cross Pirie sends it into the side net.

Redford is impeded a couple of yards outside the box and sends the free across goal. Pirie is lining up to blast the ball when Anderson gets the top of his head to it and it goes out to Caldwell who misses his kick. Morton are taking their share of the play. Anderson just fails to get his head to a Ritchie cross and Goldthorp is crowded out when seeking a shooting position.

Callaghan rescues Morton when he dives to his left to punch a McDougall shot round the post after good approach work by Redford. Russell goes down in the box when Glennie makes his challenge and the penalty claims are answered by the referee's signal that the forward took a dive.

The classier football is coming from the relaxed Morton. Skipper Hayes overlaps to send over a cross which Donaldson touches away and the Dundee 'keeper also palms out a clever cross from Miller.

Dundee go in front in 20 minutes with a goal which has a touch of luck about it. Sinclair takes a Caldwell throw-in and sends an over head kick across the goal. As Connaghan and Pirie go up together at the near post the keeper gets the ball then drops it and REDFORD sends a low, short-range shot into the net. A few minutes later Schaedler is booked following a foul on Veltch.

As the Morton defence opens to cover the other strikers, Sinclair chooses to shoot from 20 yards and sends the ball just wide. Redford goes off for treatment and Morton try to cash in on their advantage.

Miller send a low shot a foot wide as Redford is helped to the pavilion. Johnston goes on. Before he has touched the ball Morton are level. A Ritchie corner from the right finds RUSSELL unmarked and he jumps to head into the net. Time 34 minutes.

The first time Johnston is in action he injures his left knee and collapses a moment Iater. After attention he carries on, but next time he plays the ball he goes down again and gets up limping. Anderson is booked for a foul on Sinclair. After the Dundee striker gets attention Schaedler sends the free to Pirie whose header loops past the fur post.

Half-time Morton 1. Dundee 1

Reflections - The loss of scorer Redford is a mighty blow for Dundee in a hard no compromise game. Dundee are putting every thing into their effort against a slick Morton out fit playing with much pressure on them.

Dundee start the second half with Shirra on for Johnston.

McGeachie hits a tremendous right-foot shot from 20 yards and keeper Copnaghan throws himself to his right to push the ball away.

Sinclair sends, another shot from almost the same spot weakly past the same post because he is unable to get hold of a Pirie head flick properly.

Ritchie is downed by Shirra just outside the box then sends the free across goal and out of play. Pirie does well out on the right to control the ball and beat a man before crossing for Sinclair, It looks like a touch-in job for the big striker till Anderson gets a toe to the ball to deflect it out of reach

Caldwell does well to beat two men and send a good pass to McGeachie on the left. His left-foot shot scrapes past the far post.

Miller takes a free kick for Morton, finds a gap and Donaldson has to dive to his right to clutch the ball. Dundee, with only Sinclair and Pirie up front, are finding their way through the home defence regularly and McGeachie sends another shot past the post.

A clever ball from McDougall put McGeachie through again. This time he finds the attention of two defenders too much for him.

Donaldson grabs the ball at the feet of two Morton. forwards and survives. A flurry of flying boots Connaghan shows the same courage seconds later as he dives at Sinclair's feet to save a desperate situation.

McKinnon runs in on the blind side of the home defence to leap into the air and get his head to a cross. The header goes straight to the keeper. In 68 minutes another Ritchie comer-kick produces another goal for RUSSELL. The kick is from the left and the scorer is at the far goal to squeeze a header between keeper and post.

Donaldson stops a power full shot from Ritchie and Glennie completes the clearance as the now rampant Morton respond to the tremendous encouragement from their fans

Another Ritchie corner kick is flicked into Donaldson's arms by Goldthorp and when Dundee hit back a Caldwell shot goes wide.

The Dark Blues are level again. In 76 minutes a McDougall corner from the right is not cleared and GLENNIE nips in from the left to drive a low shut into the net. Dundee pull out all the stops. Their effort in tremendous as they go for a winner. Everyone moves up in support of the strikers and the home defenders clear anywhere.

In 84 minutes Dundee are in front again. Schaedler starts to move from the right-back position. There's brave move by McDougall and a lob to the far post by Caldwell where PIRIE wins a heading duel and gets the ball to his boot to fire it into the net. A cute cross-cum-shot by Ritchie beats Donaldson, hits the base of the post and goes past.

Final-Morton 2, Dundee 3.

Summing Up - What a struggled Dundee gave everything in a last magnificent effort. They sagged for a moment when they went behind then came back gloriously against a Morton outfit who had their tails in the air.
