The Dark Blues made a sluggish start against an Alloa side which even in mid-January were already entrenched in what proved to be a fruitless struggle against relegation.
For the game Dave Johnston was in at left-back to replace Erich Shaedler who failed to recover from an ankle injury, whilst lain Phillip sidelined for three months through injury was on the subs bench.
Once Dundee made the breakthrough there was no stopping them. However, they had to wait until the twentieth minute, but it was a well made and well executed strike.
Billy Pirie chased a loose ball up the left touch-line and played it forward to Billy Williamson. He evaded a defender before crossing and Eric Sinclair touched the ball on to Jocky Scott who was unchallenged and knocked the ball home from ten yards, Just three minutes elapsed before Dundee forged further in front. Jocky Scott's corner from the left was missed by Cooper in the Alloa goal and in trying to clear another defender headed the ball down to Billy Pirie who was left with a simple tap in at the far post.
Although completely in control, it wasn't until two minutes from the break that a third goal arrived. McDougall did the spade work with his lob forward spinning off the foot of Wilkinson, Billy Pirie did the rest to slam in the third.
Only three minutes into the second period Dundee increased their lead. McDougall picked a stray Carberry pass and raced forward before crossing. Jim Shirra headed the ball on to Eric Sinclair whose return header was converted by Jim Shirra from 15 yards. By this stage the visitors were reeling under the pres sure, but they held out until two minutes from time. Billy Pirie moved on to a pass from Jocky Scott to score with an angular drive to make it five.
Then in the very last minute Billy Pirie hit his fourth from an Ally Donaldson clearance to complete the visitor's misery.
