Match Report

League leaders Dundee travelled to Airdrie in search of another two points, but it was the home side who emerged with the victory thanks to an amazing 12 minute spell early in the second half.

In the first half Jackie Stewart's side contained the Dundee attacks, and only broke free of the shackles in the last 10 minutes, before the interval. Going close on the 42 minute mark when Thomson Allan produced a great diving save to push a terrific shot from Joe Cairney.

The second half was only 3 minutes old when Airdrie opened the scoring. Kevin McCann had the Dundee rearguard twisting and turning in all directions before passing to Sandy Clark whose neat flick set up John McVeigh leaving the midfielder to side foot the ball past Allan, from 10 yards.

Two minutes later the Diamonds were two goals ahead. Sandy Clark who was prominent in all of Airdrie's dangerous attacking moments took control of a forward pass in the penalty area, and was then bustled to the ground.

Referee Foote had no hesitation in pointing to the spot, and up stepped full back Paul Jonquin whose powerful shot almost burst the net.

The quick one-two gave Airdrie the confidence they had been looking for, since the season began, and it was no surprise when they added a third goal on the hour. McCann switched sides to pick up a throw in, then he jinked and weaved his way down the line leaving a trio of Dundee defenders in his wake, before sending over a cross into the penalty area, which Joe Cairney met on the full, and crashed an unstoppable volley past Allan.

For the remainder of the match. Airdrie were happy to retain their three goal advantage with Dundee being unable to bag a consolation goal. At the end of the match the home fans in the crowd of over 2000 cheered their team off the park.

Dundee boss Tommy Gemmell was unable to mask his disappointment at his own sides performance, and threatened to have all of his squad for extra training, on the Sunday morning.

The best performers for Airdrie were Jonquin, Black, Lapsley and Cairney while Dundee's Williamson, Strachan and Sinclair were worth pass marks.
