Match Report

Dundee came through the first phase of a three-game survival course in this dramatic Tayside derby at Dens Park.

The Dark Blues, who would have been virtually doomed to First Division football had they lost, scored two goals with perfect timing.

Then, in a game that brought three bookings, they defied United after little Henry Hall had pulled one back with 15 minutes left.

Now neither club in Tannadice Street can breathe easily.

But Dundee at least give themselves hope with their first win seven games. In doing so skipper Tommy Gemmell showed inbhisnexperience. Dundee's moment of truth came 30 seconds before the interval when they got a penalty after Allan Forsyth had brought down Eric Sinclair in the box. As United's protests died down the ex-Celtic star hammered the spot kick into the net. This was the spur the Dens Park men needed and eight minutes after half-time Sinclair scored a brilliant second, getting on the end of a Purdie cross to brilliantly head into the net.

United looked out of it but gradually they came storming back.

Their goal came in 75 minutes when Hall swept in a Narey free kick which had been helped on by Reid.

First-half tackles by Andy Rolland and Frank Kopel brought them bookings while Gemmell had his name taken after the interval for handling.
