Match Report

Newspaper extract from Aberdeen Press and Journal.

In a sensational finish Dundee grabbed last-minute glory after a thrill packed Texaco Cup first-leg tie with a dour Norwich outfit at Dens Park. The home men always looked more assured and methodical and, but for some smart goalkeeping by Mervyn Cawston, they would have cruised most of the way.

The young stand-in keeper was responsible for keeping the eager home men at bay and midway through the first half he pushed away a neat Ian Scoit header. But the action really got underway in the opening seconds when Dundee appeared to be denied a penalty. Ian Scott raced on to a John Scott slip and seemed to be pulled down from behind in the box.

Referee Pringle ignored the appeal and the minutes that followed brought something of a siege on the Nor wich goal. Lambie crashed over a good effort and in the 14th minute Cawstun pulled off the save of the night from Ian Scott

The same player's luck was right out midway through the half. He rounded the keeper and shot for goal, only to see a defender arrive to clear.

As in the Aberdeen game at the weekend, Dundee began to lose heart at the lack of goal returns and just before the interval they were lucky not to lose a goal. Cheesley let go a drive for goal, but no danger threatened until Briggs stepped in the way and the ball bounced into Hewitt's arms.

Dundee's anxiety became all to apparent in the, second half, but their flagging spirits were lifted in the 56th minute. Robinson careered through the defensive wall and squared to IAN SCOTT, who hammered a great drive into the roof of the net.

Norwich, who had clearly settled to hold on, were stunned and they began to reel under fierce home sure. Robinson had Cawston scrambling to hold a fierce ground shot and then Jimmy Wilson lashed' a terrific drive just over.

In the 72nd minute an Ian Scott miss proved to be a costly one for the home men. After striding through unchallenged, he shot across the face of the goal with the keeper yards from goal.

Three minutes later a shock for Dundee. A blunder by George Stewart left Jimmy BONE all alone some 20 yards from goal and as he steadied, Hewitt dashed des perately from his line. The former Partick man ever so coolly lofted the ball over him and it bounced into the net.

Dundee's hopes of putting together a useful lead seemed to have faded until a dramatic last minute. Robinson wheeled on to a Wallace slip and his shot was blocked by the keeper. LAMBIE. was perfectly placed to shoot into the net.
