Match Report

This was the second league outing for both and after being held to a 2-2 draw at Fir Park, the Dark Blues were out to try and record that first league win.

However, the visitors made the initial impact. Mike Hewitt was the first keeper in action, holding a first time effort from Joe Harper. Dave Robb then caused some anxiety in the defensive ranks, but the Dark Blues hit back instantly with great combination play between Jocky Scott and Bobby Wilson. Then a Gordon Wallace cross from the right was headed on by John Duncan, forcing Steve Murray to avert further danger by punting the ball over the bar for a corner.

All this made for a first class opening to proceedings. The home side maintained their pressure and Jimmy Wilson was left shaking his head in disbelief when his tremendous shot was saved by Geoghegan, with applause ringing all round the ground.

Seconds later Aberdeen went even closer to scoring as lan Taylor waltzed past three and slipped the ball past the advancing Hewitt to Harper. Only a finely timed tackle by Bobby Wilson saved the day.

The game continued to surge from end to end but, as the interval approached, the Dundee put in an extra effort with John Duncan the prime motivator. Twice he was unlucky to see headers fly over the bar and right on the interval Geoghegan was on the spot to baulk yet another fine header from John.

Dundee restarted from where they had left off and a power filled shot from Bobby Robinson was just inches wide of the post. As Dundee pressed for goal, big Willie Young halted many a move. After ten minutes of non-stop Dundee pressure, Aberdeen at last set up an attack and an lan Taylor pass gave Joe Harper a gilt edged chance. His final shot was a beauty - but Mike Hewitt was equal to it.

Back at the other end, only a desperate off-the-line clearance by Willoughby from a Wallace back-header kept the Dons goal intact. Minutes later there was a desperate scramble before a Jocky Scott shot was cleared,

Immediately after this came the save of the match. Duncan header looked bound for the net when, with a fantastic dive, Geoghegan got a hand to the ball and pushed it round the post for a corner.

Aberdeen took off Drew Jarvie and sent on Arthur Graham in an effort to alter the balance of play, Dundee still had the edge. Near the end Willoughby again booted the ball off the line when all seemed lost for the Dons. Then big George Stewart headed the ball from a Jocky Scott corner on to the roof of the net.

With a Goal looking almost inevitable at one end, Aberdeen almost pulled off a shock counter three minutes from the end when lan Taylor dashed through and only a brave save by Hewitt at the winger's feet brought the danger to a halt.

It isn't often that a goal-less draw feature as the memory match, but the only question the fans streamed out of the ground asking was, 'How did nobody manage to score!
