Match Report

Newspaper extract from Aberdeen Evening Express.

Dundee switched Davie Johnston to right back to accommodate the injured Bobby Wilson while skipper Doug Houston returned to the side at left back.

Former Dens Parker George McLean returned to his former ground at centre forward.

It was Dundee whe struck first and JOHN DUNCAN struck an early blow when from 15 yards he hammered a great shot past McLean.

This stung Ayr and George McLean hit the bar with a great drive. Jocky Scott tried his luck then with a long mazy run which took him deep into th? Ayr defence but his final shot was easily gathered by McLean.

Centre forward Wallace almost made it two in the 15th minute when he hit just past after a Scott pass had split the defence. In the 20th minute Dundee were awarded a penalty when Wallace was brought down in the box by Fillipi. JOHN SCOTT made no mistake.

But it was McLean to the rescue a minute later when he stopped a certain Wallace scoring with his feet.

John Scott almost made it three in the 30th minute when he went on a typical run, beating three men before hammering in a low shot which McLean saved well.

In the 35th minute Dundee went three up with a magnificent goal. Jim Steele won the ball in midfield, parted to Wallace, who crossed a great ball for JOHN SCOTT to throw himself at and head into the net.

Three minutes before the interval Dundee went four up and IAN SCOTT picked up a Duncan head flick to hammer low into the net.

(Half-time: 4-0)

In the 57th minute Ayr scored. Eric Stevenson took a free kick on the left and GRAHAM back headed into the net.

Two minutes later Ayr brought on Phil McGovern in place of Stevenson wnd two minutes after that lan SCOTT made it five when he hit a great drive past McLean.
