Dundee kicked off 1972 with a 1-1 draw with Aberdeen at Dens Park.
Aberdeen started off the brighter of the two teams by putting the Dundee defence under pressure as they looked for an early breakthrough.
Hewitt was called into action, punching clear a powerful Miller header then diving down low to stop powerful Harper drive. Dave Robb then had a golden chance to put the Dons ahead with Hewitt off his line and the goal gaping, he put his shot past the post.
Despite these early chances, Dundee took the lead after 26 minutes. Jocky Scott passed to John Duncan who piled ahead and put the ball passed the helpless Dons 'keeper.
Dundee then came into the game more but at half time, it remained one-nil to Dundee.
Just like the first half, Aberdeen were on top from the whistle to signal the start of the second half and were unlucky not to level the score only a few minutes in - Hewitt pulling off a wonder save by tipping a Willoughby header around his left side post.
Dundee would succumb their lead when Aberdeen equalised from a penalty after Miller was clipped in the box on the 65th minute. Joe Harper would step up to slot the ball home.
Aberdeen eased off a bit after their goal and Dundee would have a few chances to win but the match would end with both team level.
