Dundee kicked off on a pitch that had a thin covering of snow. Within minutes headers by Wallace and Duncan went close. Alec Kinninmonth fired in vicious shot which was luckily blocked; then Dave Johnston came up to have a go. All in the opening minutes!
The homesters kept up their pressure, and it was not until the 18th minute that Clyde had the Dundee defence in action. Jim Burns carried the ball forward some twenty yards and only a split second tackle by Johnston saved the day. The ball was diverted to Glasgow who sent in a fine shot which had Donaldson at full stretch.
In the main it was young Cairney in the Clyde goal who was being tested. He stood up well to the task, although the Dundee players helped to keep the score sheet clear by spurning several gilt edged chances.
In the second half the pattern was continued, with Clyde maintaining a packed defence. Falling snow did not make conditions easy, and players found it difficult keeping a footing. Still, Dundee had the chances to be well ahead.
Not until 10 minutes from the end were Clyde seen as an attacking force in this half, when Donaldson did well to hold a Hulston drive from 10 yards. A minute later the Glasgow side got their first corner of the second period. This, too, was squandered.
Three minutes from the end a fine header from John Duncan looked as if it would settle the issue, with Cairney diving in vain- but the ball went inches wide of the post.
In the very last minute Clyde almost pulled it out of the fire. A Flanagan effort drew Donaldson from goal. As the ball evaded the big 'keeper, lain Phillip appeared on the line to calmly save the situation.
