Match Report

Dundee launched a major defensive straight away. Jim Steele gained possession 40 yards from goal. He advanced some twenty yards before unleashing his shot. Keeper Donaldson dealt with it most capably. St. Johnstone took some time to come into the game, until a defensive error gave them their chance. Jim Pearson seized on a misclearance and headed into goal, with Ally Donaldson nowhere, the ball went only a foot wide of the post.

In the main, in the opening period, it was Dundee, however, who were the more aggressive and a bit of neat Jocky Scott juggling put Kinninmonth in possession. The No. 8's speculative lob, however, was clutched by Donaldson before Gilroy could get his head to the ball.

In the 19th minute a great move by Dundee should have brought a goal. Doug Houston started it with a precision pass to Kinninmonth, who nodded the ball to Jocky Scott, completely unmarked. With the goal yawning before him and Donaldson badly placed Jocky's final effort was wide. Fifteen minutes later Scott did get the ball in the net, but it was ruled out for offside.

Dundee were still calling the tune but the St. Johnstone defence gave nothing away. A couple of minutes later they were lucky to survive. Wallace first timed a bouncing ball just yards out, Donaldson, coming out to intercept, was caught on the arm by the ball. The ball came back to Wallace who shot again - only to see Rennie boot desperately off the line!

Just on the interval St. Johnstone produced the best effort of the game -a tremendous McCarry drive, Ally Donaldson flew through the air to make an equally fine save.

Falconer substituted for Gilroy on the restart, but it was the visitors, who had defended so well in the first half, who launched into the attack. Henry Hall outpaced lain Phillip and sent a cracker of a shot Ally Donald son's way. The big keeper did wel! to hold it. With Hall finding form, Saints went to with a will and it was the Dundee defence who had to show their qualities.

A Scott lob gave Falconer a chance, but keeper Donaldson forestalled the danger.

In 57 minutes Saints aggression paid off. Hall, pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area. He stumbled as he did so but still managed to hit the ball towards goal. Ally Donaldson, caught unawares, could only watch the ball as it lodged in the net.

Morale boosted Saints piled on the pressure and John Connolly tested Donaldson with a great effort.

Hall, however, was the danger man and wherever he was Dundee had to be on the alert. Eleven minutes from the end Dundee threw off the shackles with a fine move that put Kinninmonth. in possession. With the Saints keeper out of goal Alec hit the ball with all he had. Lambie and Rennie both tried to get to it with upraised arms, but instead of dropping the ball continued to soar, hit the bar and was cleared!

Three minutes from the end Scott sent a nice pass to Gordon Wallace. The centre's effort was turned for a corner by Gordon. In the last second a Kinninmonth header was only inches wide.
