Match Report

Milan arrived in Edinburgh two days before the match and were met by a group of club officials including two directors, manager Bob Shankly and trainer Sammy Kean who escorted the Italians to their base in the Royal Hotel in Dundee city centre.

The city was gripped with cup fever despite the first leg score and fans turned out to see the superstars of Serie A including Gianni Rivera whom Milan general manager Gipo Viani described as "the second best player in the world only after Pele".

The second leg was officiated by Belgian Lucien van Nufell and saw the same Dundee side line up as that in the San Siro the week before. Milan made only one change bringing in Gino Pivatelli for the injured Dino Sani.

A 35,169 crowd roared Dundee on as they attempted to break down the defensive Italian line up. The Dark Blues pressured for the precious opener and twice in a very physical first half, had strong claims for penalties turned down. On the verge of half time a break through eventually came when Alan Gilzean headed home an Alan Cousin cross. Despite a brave attempt in the second half Dundee could not score again and the frustration showed in Allan Gilzean six minutes from time when he was sent off for a touchline tackle on Benitez.

Manager Bob Shankly reflected on the match "If we'd got a goal earlier we might have done something about the final result. I thought the boys played hard and we should have had at least two penalties."

The post match banquet saw the happy AC Milan players (reported to be on £700 per man to reach the final) presented with travelling rugs as presents on their trip to Dundee
