Dundee opened with some excellent football and a Merchant header from a Carmichael cross looked set to open the scoring until Tommy Younger turned it for a corner.
However, it was the first serious involvement of Hibs' Gordon Smith in the proceedings which broke the deadlock. He swung over one of his inch perfect crosses for Reilly to head in from the near post in seven minutes.
However, Dundee were not disheartened and equalised two minutes later. Hill passed to Roy who evaded the goalkeeper before scoring amidst fruitless offside claims from Hibs.
The visitors had a lot of the play after this with Roy and Hill doing most damage. It wasn't all Dundee and Smith was the main architect of the Hibs attacks.
The game went through another two phases before the interval with end-to-end stuff following Dundee's period of dominance and then the home team taking command as half time approached. Despite the openness of the game the teams went it at 1-1. Hibs had made the clearer chances but when they got that far Brown and
Malloy proved in good form. The second half began with Hibs in full flight. They had a penalty claim turned down and Brown coped well with shots from Smith and Johnstone.
Dundee centre-half Malloy had played extremely well against the dangerous Reilly and left back Irvine was just beginning to get the better of the elusive Smith when the two Hibs men combined to put their team back in the lead in 60 minutes. Smith initiated a move which climaxed with Reilly dashing between Malloy and Irvine in the box to score.
Hibs continued to go forward but Dundee didn't lie down and had a couple of unsuccessful penalty claims.
However, it was Hibs who added to the scoring in 76 minutes. Willie Ormond crossed for Smith to head home.
Dundee had most of the remainder of the match with centre forward Merchant doing well, while Carmichael had a shot cleared off the line. But the game ended 3-1 for Hibs.
Dundee had almost as much of the match as Hibs but lacked a Smith or Reilly. Half of this problem was to be rectified some years later of course when Gordon Smith joined them in the "twilight" of his career and achieving an unique record in the process by winning championship medals with three different clubs, Hearts, being the
When Dundee did go forward they were met with stout opposition from Hibs 17-year-old centre half Plenderleith, who was to become a star for the club.
