Match Report

A raging wind and the referee's whistle dictated the run of play in this vital league game. Football skill was rarely seen.

The toss gave Celts first opportunity of harnessing the wind. They did it well too, especially on the left, where W. Gallacher and Tully struck up a fine understanding.

With precise man to man passes they moved sweetly forward and gave Johnstone plenty of chances to display his sudden spurts.

It was certainly a testing time for the Dark Blues new defence formation, and they fought dourly.

In his unaccustomed position at left back Boyd played confidently and Gray gave nothing away.

The run of the game is clearly shown by the fact that Beonnar, although brought into the game several times, did not have to take one bye-kick during the first half.

Celtic lost the game through sheer bad tactics, To be two goals in the lead and then come out on the losing side is an unusual experience for the Parkhead side. This was caused to some extent by the way they wasted time.

Their go-slow methods lost them the place, and when Dundee drew level, Celtic had no longer the strength to fight back.

It was not until eight minutes from the interval that Dundee were able to shake off Celtic and go on the offensive This was their brightest football patch with the wing-halves coming into the picture.

Celtic's ret goal came when the ball went behind following a Tully-Rattray duel.

Despite protests, the referee awarded a corner. Lynch sent this for another corner. Just as the kick was being taken, Tully ran across the goal-mouth, Gray was lured into following him, and so leaving a gap for Johnstone to head home. Sixteen minutes had gone.

The wind took a definite say in the next gal a minute later.

Boden thumped the ball down the centre, Cowie leaped, but could only touch the ball with the top of his head. Johnstone was on the spot to run through and send an unsaveable shot past Lynch.

Dundee's first came from throw in on the left-wing.

Gerrie made ground, then lobbed over Boden's head. Stott was there to score a good goal two minutes from the interval.

When Dundee got the wind their forwards just could not cope with it.

The ball was too fiery for their inside men to hold, and the Celtic half backs tackled grimly. Then the homesters changed their plan, and began to hit the ball.

Stott got in a terrific try which Bonnar saved brilliantly, giving away a corner. Gerrie came into the picture with a full blooded shot, and then he scored the long-delayed equaliser after accepting a header from Gunn.

It was mostly Dundee now, and a terrified barrage was laid on six minutes from time. After several near things Gerrie headed away from Bonnar to score the winner.

Celts made several team changes during the game. McPhail was crippling on the right-wing all the second half. Weir finished up at centre, Johnstone at inside-right, and Docherty at right-half.

This was Dundee's best defensive game for some time. The forward line, however, never settled to a constructive game, although Stott harassed the defence, and Gerrie and Hill had individual bursts.

It was a hard punishing game, and the two points put Dundee once more at the head of the league.
