Match Report

It was a case of same again for Dundee as they lined up for the Boxing Day fixture with Caley Thistle. The only noticeable change being Gary Harkins' haircut, the midfielder sporting a mohawk for this outing.

The team travelled North on Christmas Day and manager Jocky Scott reported in the press during the week there had been no complaints which only goes to show the commitment to the cause each player has. In may have been a wasted trip however, as the cold weather hit the Highlands and Caley appealed for volunteers to help get the ground and pitch ready for the match.

As the teams lined up on the park which despite having small sections on white and piles of snow bordering it the tannoy announced a thanks to all the fans who had come out to help and make the match possible including a set of Dundee fans.

The match started with little action but that didn't stop the traveling support making themselves heard, it was clear they had enjoyed their trip North and as early as five minutes in they might have actually had something to shout about.

Harkins slipped the ball through to Malone on the left and his cut back found Griffiths who stepped away from his marker at the back post but didn't get his shot right and saw it fly well wide.

Colin McMenamin was first to test Ryan Esson with a low shot after being played in by Griffiths but the Caley keeper pushed the ball behind for a corner. Caley had there first effort soon after but it wasn't to even trouble Douglas.

Adam Rooney got space in the box but Jim Lauchlan wasta across to block before the shot reached the goal. That was a rare first half chance and Dundee were soon on the attack again with Kerr then Griffiths seeing efforts blocked before Harkins was on the ball again and causing problems for the home side defence.

Another through ball this time perfectly weighted for McMenamin to latch onto but the striker's effort was blocked behind. From the comer the ball looked to be overhit but landed for Eric Paton at the back post who could do little else but poke to towards goal only for Caley's defence to boot clear.

Caley's best chance of the half came when some good play saw Rooney wide on the left his low drilled ball across was allowed to run by Gary Mackenzie only far Danni Sanchez to arrive at the back post. A touch would have given Caley the lead but the Spaniard couldn't get anything on it which must have left Gary letting out a huge sigh of relief.

Dundee took control again with Harkins pulling the strings, firstly finding McMenamin with a neat chip pass but he couldn't quite turn and saw another effort blocked. Harkins then picked up the ball on the left and switched it quickly to Paton who cut inside before firing over.

It seemed like all Dundee's hard work and great play was going to bring no reward as the teams played out the final minutes of the half until Griffiths got free on the right and almost invited Djebi-Zadi to bring him down. The Caley left back did and Griffiths dusted himself down before side footing the ball into the net.

That was it for what could be described as a perfect half. Good football paired with a lead and the Dundee faithful could not have been happier as the team went in at the break one up.

The second period was to start as it was to go on though and it wasn't Dundee who kept up the pressure. Djebi- Zadi almost made up for his misjudgment during the penalty situation right away with a 30 yard screamer which Douglas had to tip over the bar.

Douglas was involved again soon after but it wasn't a shot or chance but instead a unusual decision from the Assistant Referee. As the ball was at about the half way line the flag went up and referee Steve Nicholls was alerted to the fact that Rab had been marking his goalposts on the six yard line. This brought not only a yellow card for the Dundee keeper but a free kick on the six yard line.

With the whole Dundee side back on the line Rooney cleverly chipped the ball only to see it come off the bar before Dundee eventually cleared the danger.

Dundee had there first chance to extended the lead in the second half and it was a great chance for a former Caley man. Forsyth crossed from the left and found Richie Hart coming in at the back post only for him to head well over. Moment later Dundee were to rue that miss as Caley leveled the score.

Brian Kerr knocked the ball back but it was loose and Adam Rooney ran onto it before passing between Lauchlan and Mackenzie and slipping it low beneath Douglas.

Forsyth had a chance immediately to restore the lead when Griffiths charged down Esson and forced him into a sloppy kick straight to the man who scored the winner last time these sides met in the Alba Cup Final. Forsyth seemed to rush the show though and curled it wide of goal.

Hart came close again with a free kick which was well hit but straight at Esson. Harkins then picked up a booking for throwing the ball away which he would later regret.

At this stage the legs were getting tired and the match began to stretch. Caley were the first to break from a Dundee corner and Douglas produce a fine two handed save to deny goal scorer Rooney a second.

Griffiths curled a shot wide on the break and it was real end to end stuff as Cox fired over when he had time to do better and Harkins matched his effort when he blazed one of his own over the bar.

Dundee made a change with Maros Klimpl replacing Craig Forsyth and the action continued to produce chance after chance with none better than the one that fell to Sanchez.

In space in the box he managed to lift the ball over Douglas and it looked in all the way before ended up inches wide of the post. There was no time to take a breath before the next chance this time for Dundee. Malone lifted the ball over the top and without taking a touch to control Griffiths flicked the ball over Esson but wide of the post. Great chances for both sides that could have won the match.

Harkins then saw picked up his second booking and with that a red. He arrived late into a challenge and could have no real complaints having been booked earlier. Jocky quickly replaced McMenamin with Pat Clarke.

There was still time for one late chance and despite being a man better off it fell to Dundee. Griffiths again somehow found himself in on the right but his low shot was blocked by the legs of the outcoming Esson.

In the end a draw was probably a fair result given how Dundee were on top in the first half and the hosts in the second.

Asked before the match if they would have been happy with a point and Dundee probably would have said yes but it can only be a positive sign when the players and management come away disappointed with only a point at places like the Caledonian Stadium.
