Match Report

Dundee's thirteen match unbeaten league run came to an end with defeat to bottom of the table Airdrie United at Dens. It was a tale of two penalties, Leigh Griffiths' spot kick being save by Stephen Robertson at one end of the park and shortly afterwards Kevin McDonald sending Rab Douglas the wrong way from the spot to claim the points.

Things went from bad to worse for the Dark Blues at the end of the first half when Gary Mackenzie was sent off for a challenge on keeper Robertson, and while the numbers were evened up by the dismissal of Airdrie central defender Robert Donnelly in the closing moments, the damage had long since been done and Kenny Black's men departed with a deserved three points.

Not the start of the new year that Dundee were looking for as they had the chance to move eleven points clear at the top of the table. Suspended Gary Harkins was replaced by Maros Klimpl in the midfield and up front Pat Clarke came in for his first start since November with Colin McMenamin dropping to the bench.

The winter weather meant that the match originally scheduled for New Broomfield had been switched to Dens but even after the switch the club required help from volunteers to ensure the match passed a 10 am pitch inspection. Referee Colin Brown looked over the park and gave the green light for the match to go ahead. Clarke had the chance to repay manager Jocky Scott for a start within two minutes when a ball over the top from Brian Kerr found the former Clyde man, he brought the ball down but fired a low shot across the face of goal and wide.

Minutes later he came even closer after Leigh Griffiths got wide on the right and cut it back for Clarke. The striker this time beat Robertson in the Airdrie goal but his shot crashed back off the bar. Five minutes in and Dundee were well on top but the domination wasn't to last very long.

Airdrie's first chance came from a free kick which was deflected wide. Dundee broke away from the resulting corner but Richie Hart over hit his pass and Griffiths couldn't reach it.

Airdrie then had a great chance to take the lead when a long ball to the back post dropped to Scott McLaughlin, his shot looked to be going in but hit his team mate John Baird and allowed Dundee to clear. They kept up their pressure and Ryan McCann flicked a Richard Waddell cross towards goal and Rab Douglas was at full stretch has he saved with one hand.

Then against the run of play Dundee had a huge chance to take the lead. Klimpl found Hart in the area and as he was brought down ref Brown pointed to the spot.

After firing Dundee's goal from the spot last week in Inverness, Griffiths stepped up but this time his spot kick was saved and held well by Robertson.

McCann had the next chance for Airdrie with a low shot which went just wide before Griffiths had the perfect chance to make up for his penalty miss. Dundee broke away and this time Hart found the striker through the middle. He was heading for goal but Simon Starey put in a great last ditch block to keep the score level. The visitors then took the lead when they did what

Griffiths had failed to do and scored from the spot. A disaster in the defence led to the spot kick when Gary Mackenzie's clearance hit his defensive partner Jim Lauchlan before falling to Diarmuid O'Carroll who Lauchlan brought down and ref Brown again pointed to the spot.

Kevin McDonald stepped up and slotted the ball low into the comer to give Airdrie a deserved lead.

The remaining twenty minutes of the half were played out with very little action until the final minute. A long ball forward fell to Clarke who flicked the ball towards goal only for the outcoming Robertson to hold on to the ball, defender MacKenzie challenged the keeper though and was given his marching orders just before the break.

Ten man Dundee had a big task on their hands second period but the half started in much the same way the first had ended with little action before Griffiths bursts through the Airdrie defence.

The striker picked it up inside the Airdrie half and drove towards the center of the defence. A block tackle saw the ball fall to Hart who quickly played it back to Griffiths but with his back to goal he couldn't get a shot in.

Airdrie had a huge chance to double their lead due to some slack defending from Eddie Malone. The left back couldn't get the ball clear and was robbed by O'Carroll on the edge of the area. He was in on goal but got his shot all wrong and fired well over the bar. Dundee brought on McMenamin for Clarke as they tried to force an opportunity but it was Airdrie again who came close with two huge chance.

The first fell to O'Carroll again when he got free in the box but his quick shot was saved by the face of Douglas who didn't know much about it. Moments later and with Dundee pressing forward Airdire broke away.

A long ball found Baird who was up against the last defender in Malone. The Airdrie man turned him inside. out before drilling a low shot which Douglas did well to hold to keep Dundee in the game.

Brian Kerr had a chance to work Robertson but his weak effort from the edge of the box was easy for the Airdrie man. Dundee did have a few half chances and after Darren Young replaced Maros Klimpl the midfielder saw one of those in form of a volley fly well over the bar.

Next up it was Craig Forsyth's chance to come close with a header from a corner but after it was headed off the line Airdrie broke and Darren Smith found himself one on one but Douglas saved with his legs to again deny Airdrie.

Dundee did keep up a bit of pressure and when Paton slipped in Hart it looked like they were going to steal a point but Robertson denied the midfielder. The Airdrie keeper has been one of the most impressive performers throughout Airdrie's matches against The Dees since Dundee were relegated in 2005 and was called into action one more time in the final moments.

Robert Donnelly was given his marching orders for a second booking and Dundee awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal. Paton stepped up and curled it towards goal but Robertson did well to get down a push the ball away ensuring that Airdrie would leave Dens with all three points.

Last season manager Jocky Scott had spoken of his disappointment in dropping so many points to the sides at the bottom of the table. Despite Dundee's fine unbeaten run and eight point lead at the top of the table this defeat means the club have now dropped seven points to the bottom two sides, something which I'm sure Jocky would have been keen to avoid.

Manager's Programme Notes

Firstly on behalf of myself, the staff & players I wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year. I thank the Directors and Management of Airdrie United for accepting our offer to change the fixture to Dens Park this weekend.

We have now begun the second half of the season in a good position and it is important we do not get complacent and take things for granted. We must continue to work hard and show the same desire for the remaining games. We also need your continued support behind the team to help us achieve our targets.

I welcome Kenny Black and his team back to Dens Park for the New Year fixture, it doesn't seem that long since we last played them in what was a difficult match and we are very aware that today will be equally as difficult.

In view of this we need you to get behind the team from kick off as usual.

Enjoy the game.
