Match Report

The only match in the League competition was the one at Easter Road where the Tayside club tackled the Edinburgh Irishmen. There was no other counter attraction of any note in the city, and a good gate was therefore expected.

All expectations were of a disappointing nature, and when the teams lined up only about 4000 spectators would be within the grounds. Losing the toss the Hibernians kicked off against a strong wind.

The visitors immediately took up the pressing, and in the first few minutes Vail opened the scoring. This early success encouraged the Northern men to keep up the pressure, and, aided by the strong wind, they kept the home team defending their goal.

Latterly, however, the home men, headed by Groves, made a persistent raid on the Dundee citadel. Their shooting was of an erratic kind, and all their attempts to score were of a fruitless nature. The bye-kick enabled the Dundee men to take up the pressing, and a fine chance was afforded Vail to increase their lead, but this, however, he failed to do so.

Groves was responsible for some splendid work, and he was again chiefly instrumental in bringing the leather to Barrett's charge. There the ball bobbed about until sent up to midfield where Smith and Murdoch succeeded in bringing it back to its former situation. The former was lying in a good position, and quickly scored the equalising point.

Halftime was now being looked for, and both teams continued to strain every nerve. Longair was deservedly penalised for rough tactics towards Groves, but nothing came of the free kick. The interval was sounded, each side having a goal.

The second half was not long in progress when the score sheet was again opened. The Hibernians kept up a persistent attack right from the resumption, and Smith gave the Irishmen the leading point. Down came the home men in irresistible fashion, and, with a strong wind in their favour, they continued to hem their opponents in.

The Dundee defence was sorely tried, but a foul against Groves gave them relief at last. They managed to get within scoring distance of the home goal, but Robertson and McFarlane cleared, and Barrett was again visited. Long shots were sent in to the visitors' custodian, and Murphy had the satisfaction of scoring the third point for the home men.

Dundee were now a beaten team, and every effort on the part of the forwards was easily checkmated by the home defence. The game was of a one-sided nature to the finish, when the result was - Hibernians, 3 goals; Dundee, 1 goal.
