Match Report

At Dundee, looking to the good form displayed by the Glasgow club recently, much interest centred in the game, but unluckily the weather throughout the forenoon was of the most wretched description, rain falling copiously, and rendering the ground wet and slippery, besides militating against a large attendance.

Nevertheless fully 2000 people were present at the start. Teams:- Dundee - Barrett: Darroch and Burgess; Dundas, Longair, and Henry; Thomson, Sawers, Vail, McDonald, and Keillor.

Rangers - Bell; Smith and Crawford; Marshall Gibson, and Mitchell; Barker, McCreadie, Oswald, McPherson, and A. Smith.

Dundee won the toss, and Oswald kicked off towards the western goal. The Rangers opened the attack, but Dundee replied, and Keillor had a try for goal, but the ball missed the post by inches. The light blue forwards, by smart and accurate passing, soon got into position, and Oswald let drive for goal, but Barrett returned smartly, and Bergess kicked strongly down the field.

Vail broke away alone, and piloted the ball through a host of opponents. He parted with the leather to Sawers, who sent in a well-directed shot, but Smith was in the way, and play was transferred to midfield.

Near the close of the period a "scene" was narrowly averted, as Barrett received a nasty kick from one of the opposing forwards, and another Dundee player retaliated with his fists. The referee smoothed over the difference, however, and the game proceeded.

At half-time neither team had scored.

The second half opened briskly, the Dundee men making the pace hot. After repeated attempts at either end, Oswald opened the scoring for the western club with a swift grounder. Dundee, on kicking off from midfield, replied with vigour, and forced the light blues to act on the defensive. A corner kick for Dundee was taken by Keillor. The ball was sent hard into goal, and Bell in attempting to fist out knocked it into the net, putting the teams on level terms.

Excitement now ran high, and the play from this cause suffered considerably, miskicks being frequent on both sides. For a time neither side could claim any advantage, but well on towards the close Oswald again found an opening, and put his team in the ascendancy.

Play had been restarted but a minute or two when Barrett was again beaten with a long drooping shot, allowing the ball to slip through his hands. From this play fell away considerably, and the match finished in semi darkness with the scores standing - Rangers, 3 goals: Dundee, 1.
