Although he never played for Dundee, Sammy will be remembered as one of Shankly's back room staff when the league title was won.
He was the trainer-coach for the team prior to Shankly's arrival, having been appointed by Willie Thornton in May 1957.
Before joining Dundee he came through the junior ranks with Rob Roy before joining Hibs and stayed for nine years. He then became assistant trainer and then trainer between the years of 1947 and 1957 when he took up his post at Dens.
Sammy left Dundee to become a manager on his own account, taking over the reigns at Falkirk in 1965, but lasted only some seventeen months in that post before being replaced by John Prentice in 1966
